Restless Legs: Preparing to Ask for Help

If leg sensations are bothering you at night, this page can help you prepare for a conversation with a GP. It does not offer a checklist to diagnose restless legs syndrome or identify its cause.

What to note

  • How you would describe the sensation in your own words.
  • When it happens and how often.
  • Whether anything seems to change it.
  • How it affects rest, sleep or daytime activities.
  • Any recent changes in medicines, supplements or routine.

Questions for your GP

Ask what assessment is appropriate and whether your medication list is relevant. Your clinician can decide whether tests, treatment or a referral are needed. This site does not suggest blood-test thresholds or a medicine to request.

Before buying supplements or other products

Iron, magnesium and compression products may appear in online discussions. This directory does not recommend them for your symptoms. Take questions to a GP or pharmacist rather than choosing a product based on an online diagnosis.

Finding support in Ireland

Start with your usual GP practice for appointment information. Our GP preparation page and service directory explain questions to ask about consultations and referrals. You do not need to try products for a set number of weeks before asking for help.
